Introducing Our India Mobility Video Series
As one of the world’s fastest-growing economies and a pulsing hub for innovation and talent, India isn’t just a source for outbound moves – it’s a strategic location for inbound mobility, regional headquarters and talent development. The country boasts a thriving tech sector, an expanding middle class, and plenty of government support aimed at easing the process of doing business. Accordingly, many of the world’s leading companies are sharpening their focus on the opportunities that India has to offer in order to meet business demands, but doing so requires an understanding of the country’s unique compliance landscape, evolving employee expectations, and cultural nuances.
This was the drive behind our latest video series, a deep dive into global mobility in India! I teamed up with Weichert’s Nidhi Mirpuri, along with Lata Patel and Rajesh Motwani of IOS Relocations, a leading destination services provider in India, for a six-part special exploring the opportunities, intricacies, and realities of relocation in this dynamic market.
Each episode zeroes in on a specific topic—ranging from tech to intern programs and move types—but several key themes consistently emerged, painting a clearer picture of today’s mobility landscape in India. Let’s take a look:
India is a Magnet for Multinationals…
India’s rapid economic growth, vast market potential, and large, skilled workforce are drawing in multinationals across industries. With initiatives like Make in India and new production-linked incentives, the government is actively encouraging foreign investment, especially in sectors like semiconductors, defense, and e-commerce.
…However, Some Hurdles Persist
Despite its appeal, India still presents hurdles. Bureaucratic red tape, complex tax laws, and rising costs are real concerns for businesses entering and operating in this market. Companies are getting creative—partnering with local tax experts, embracing automation, and offering flexible relocation packages to navigate these complexities.
Mobility is Helping to Fuel India’s Growth
Talent mobility within India is a significant driver of economic growth. The movement of skilled professionals brings fresh ideas, innovative approaches, and energy, which help build stronger, more dynamic, and creative ecosystems. This mobility ensures that industries in different parts of the country have access to the right skills, giving them a competitive edge.
The Country Boasts a Demographic Dividend
With a whopping 65% of the population under the age of 35, India has a demographic advantage, particularly in contrast with its aging Western counterparts! This young (and increasingly skilled) population supports consumerism and positions India as a prime talent hub for global and domestic employers alike.
Cultural Nuances Matter
India’s rich cultural diversity, with 22 official languages and distinct workplace cultures across states, adds layers of complexity to relocation. Because of the differing systems county-wide, domestic relocations within India require as much planning as international moves. Factors such as rental deposits, brokers’ fees, schooling expenses, and lifestyle adjustments contribute to the complexity and cost of domestic relocations.
Even repatriating Indian nationals and their families face reverse culture shock and challenges re-adjusting to local market opportunities. Companies need to offer thoughtful, tailored and structured solutions (and reintegration programs) to ensure successful relocation experiences that respect these regional differences.
And that’s just the beginning. Each episode of this series digs deeper into the factors shaping mobility in India—a country as complex as it is full of promise. Ready to dive in? Tuck into our inaugural episode below.
